A walk of infinite variety, the Cleveland way is full of surprises. Around
every comer lies something of interest for the walker; a fine view, an
ancient abbey, a grouse flying across your path, or a hidden fishing village.
Do not rush this route. Take your time and pause occasionally to enjoy
the rich beauty of the surrounding landscape.
One hundred and ten miles in length, the Cleveland way creates a broad
horseshoe around the North York Moors National Park, taking in the full
length of the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast. The walk can
be divided into two distinct and contrasting sections. The first section
from Helmsley to Saltburn-By-the-Sea includes some of the finest heather
moorland in Britain, linked by farmland and woodland. The second section,
from Saltburn to Filey, follows dramatic cliff scenery , including at
Boulby the highest sea cliffs on the East Coast of England. The contrast
between moorland and coast is unique to this National Trail. In walking
the path you will be travelling through a landscape steeped in history
. Historic buildings are much in evidence: Helmsley Castle, Duncombe Park,
Rievaulx Abbey, Mount Grace Priory , Guisborough Priory , Whitby Abbey
and Scarborough Castle are all on, or in close proximity to, the route
and are well worth taking the time to visit.
The remains of iron ore, jet and alum shale mining are present, while
modem forestry , agriculture and settlement have all left their mark.
The natural history encountered on the Cleveland Way is as diverse as
its scenery . The moors are rightly famous for their birds. Red Grouse
are the most obvious and their raucous call will accompany the walker
across the moors.
In summer, Golden Plover, Lapwing and Skylark can be seen by the sharp-eyed
observer. At this time of year, the coastal path abounds in flowers, while
the cliffs act as nest sites for Fulmars, Kittiwakes, Shags and Gulls.
Although gentle in some areas, the walking on the Cleveland Way is generally
fairly strenuous in nature, particularly when crossing the Cleveland Hills
where you will encounter a number of steep slopes. The undulating nature
of much of the coastal path means that a full day's excursion will more
then likely involve a number of ups and downs. In summer the path is generally
dry, but in wetter winter conditions be prepared to encounter some mud.
Remember to take particular care when walking near cliff edges, especially
as erosion is a common occurrence. Conditions on the moors should never
be taken for granted so ensure that you are adequately clothed in warm
waterproof clothing before setting out. Mists can descend quickly so make
sure that you have a map and compass with you, and are able to use them
if necessary .
Nine enjoyable days should be allowed to walk the route from end to end.
